Common Folk is a small design studio run by a husband and wife making work that sits between art and use.
We both come from backgrounds in industrial design and color & material design, which mostly means we pay close attention to how things look, feel, and live in a space. That said, we’re not too interested in things feeling overly perfect or overly planned.
Based in Detroit, we create pottery, prints, and other objects for the home. We’re drawn to modern folk design, old things with character, and homes that feel collected over time rather than put together all at once.
Some pieces are practical. Some are just nice to look at. Most are a bit of both.

hand-building
Our pottery is created with hand-building… a slower, more tactile approach to pottery, where each piece is shaped by hand rather than a wheel. The result is subtle variation, small irregularities, and objects that feel truly one of a kind.
sgraffito
Sgraffito is a process of layering underglaze onto clay, then carving through it to reveal the surface beneath. Each line is drawn by hand, giving every piece a sense of depth, variation, and individuality.
